Description:
In this 4-part series, Barb Bancroft, RN, MSN, PNP goes step by step through how to complete a systematic history and assessment of the cardiorespiratory, GI/GU, and Neurological System. The sessions in this series can be taken consecutively, or in any order, or each topic independently without having to commit to the other sessions in this series.

• Case Study: Patient with chest pain and the PQRST-AAA mnemonic—gender specificity
• Doing a Focused Medical History – based on Chief Complaint & how much time you have
• Interpretation of Vital Signs: special considerations & the importance of thinking critically

Objectives of “B: Cardiorespiratory Exam” webinar:
• Identifying and inspecting important landmarks on the anterior and posterior chest
• Auscultation–heart sounds made easy—heart murmurs
• Correlate common cardiovascular conditions with landmarks
• Interpretation of Heart rate, heart rate variability, pulses, respiratory rate/rhythm
• Normal lung sounds with pathological/adventitious sounds correlated with common pulmonary conditions—pneumonia, asthma, COPD

• Identifying the underlying structures in the GI/GU systems in a 3-D, 4-quadrant thorax and abdomen (from the nipples to the kneecaps)
• Case Study: the patient with acute abdominal pain—the common and not-so-common causes
• Evaluation of the kidney—CVA tenderness, flank pain, systemic symptoms
• Exploring the itis’s – gastroenteritis, appendicitis, cholecystitis, colitis,
• Knowing all the differences between pyelonephritis, glomerulonephritis, cystitis

Objectives of “D: Neurological Exam” webinar:
• A quick mental status test
• Functional Neuroanatomy of the Four Lobes of the Cerebral Cortex
• Motor Exam—the Motor Triad—spasticity (stroke) vs. rigidity (Parkinson’s disease) delineated, cerebellar signs (it’s not always alcohol-induced!)
• Sensory Exam—proprioception, double simultaneous stimuli, pain, light touch
• Cranial Nerves as “units” not as single nerves—common and not-so-common pathology (COVID-19 and the loss of taste and smell

Barb Bancroft, RN, MSN, PNP
Barb Bancroft is a widely acclaimed nursing teacher who has taught courses on Advanced Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, and Physical Assessment to both graduate and undergraduate students. Also certified as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, she has held faculty positions at the University of Virginia, the University of Arkansas, Loyola University of Chicago, and St. Xavier University of Chicago. Barb is known for her extensive knowledge of pathophysiology and as one of the most dynamic nursing speakers in North America today. Delivering her material with equal parts of evidence based practise, practical application, and humour, she has taught numerous seminars on clinical and health maintenance topics to healthcare professionals, including the Association for Practitioners for Infection Control, The Emergency Nurses’ Association, the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, and more.
